Weekend work

August 25th – Saturday

Had a good nights sleep on Friday. Had planned to do a 7 mile workout on Friday but felt a bit out of it all day so rested instead. A good option too as on Saturday I was awake and up before 8am without any alarm having to shift me – always a good sign. The resting heart rate was back to 48 BPM as distinct to 60 plus last Friday week (the day after my holidays). Ran down the town, up and down the railway rd, onto the Cork rd turning left at Pikes Cross and taking the back rd back to the house. In all 8 miles run at a relaxed medium pace. It’s a good looped route with nice downhills and good pulls to  test you – ideal for tempo and medium runs. Last 3 miles were run in 7.30, 7.30 and 7.47. It was also good to have the garmin again. (Dublin airport security were kind enough to locate it in the airport and post it on- chuffed).

8 miles – 1.02.04 – 7.45 pace

Sunday 26th August

Felt fresh for this one. Met the club runners at 9.00 am. There was probably 10-12 of us when we started out but some of the tem turned back after 6 miles or so either having done 7 beforehand or having done 13 beforehand. That left 7 of us who did the rest of the mileage together. Took another lovely route –turning off for Lombardstown, onto Ballyclough, negotiated some very tough climbs, picked up some water at Mallow golf club (thanks Paudie) and onto Newtwopothouse before running down the Cork rd and a loop of Mallow town before finishing at the roundabout. I was happy enough to take it handy down the back aiming to get some time up on my legs – 2.42.25. Average pace was around 9 minutes. Heart rate was a small bit higher than I expected 146 but a job well done. Hope to do something similar next week and may increase to 20 miles. Again slow miles again next week using upcoming half marathons as pace runs and midweek races as tempo runs. A job well done

18 miles in 2.42.25. 9 minute pace . Average HR 146

Slow Monday but a nice Ballycotton 5 run

Monday 20th August

10 weeks to the Dublin Marathon. It really means 7 weeks of training left and 3 weeks of a taper. I will have a fairer idea of what I am capable of at this stage having done 2 more half marathons, a 10K race and a number of 20 plus mile runs. I had planned to do the Cork Cobh 15 mile race but it falls on the very same day as my last planned long run (22-23 miles) so I will see about that closer the time. Maybe I could push the 23 mile run out to the middle of the week after that ? Last year for Dublin the benefits of training really kicked in around September so here’s hoping.....

Anyway I am writing this as the half marathon yesterday really was a suck in, not the time but the poor effort over the last 3 miles. Was supposed to go out for a planned 9 mile run today but the legs wouldn’t move. Managed 4 miles before walking the next mile and jogging home for the last mile. That was 6 miles in total at around 10 minute pace. It serves as a recovery jog if nothing else. My good wife spoke sense when she said it was a bit dumb expecting to do 9 miles the day after. Hard not to feel overwhelmed at the moment so will be keeping it steady all the way until a planned tempo run on Thursday.

6 miles – 60 minutes

Tuesday 21st August

Did my evening session with Mallow ac. It was a tough one as always but I was happy with my form. Buying new trainers in Buckleys Sport made a difference. The other ones had worn quite badly along the outside heel and the cushioning was well and truly hammered. Anyway did the usual 2 mile run to the industrial estate followed by 20 minute tempo run. I covered 3.05 miles which is probably a record for me. Then 3 minute recovery followed by 8 X60 second sprints. I was nackered by 5th sprint and coasted through the last 3. It amazes me to see some of the guys stroll through these sprints at some speed and never seem to be even under the slightest stress. Some going.... Another 2 mile jog back to the car. I had no garmin but one of the group reckoned 8 miles which will do me fine.

8 miles – 2 mile warm up, 3 mile tempo run, 1.1 mile sprints, 2 mile cooldown

Wednesday 22nd August

Decided to wait until the afternoon to head out. I wanted the legs to recover from yesterday. Just as well really as when i did venture out before the legs had that heavy feeling again. Of course I had no garmin but I reckon first mile was 8.16, mile 2 was under 8 minutes, mile 3 slightly over and last 1.4 miles just under 8 minute pace. Was feeling a lot better over  the last two miles. Met my wife outside the house and we did a 2 mile jog together. The pace was slow for me but it was a good workout for Aoiffe. A good medium workout. In future i hope to do my Wednesday jogs in future in Mayfield taking advantage of the hills.

5.4 miles under 44 minutes, 2 miles in 23 minutes.

Thursday 24th August –Ballycotton 5 mile race

Hadn’t planned to do this but I was happy with how the 20 minute tempo run went in training on Tuesday so decided to give it a shot. I had planned to do a 4 mile tempo run with 2 warmup and 1 cooldown on this day so doing a race instead fulfilled the same purpose. Got a lift down off one of the lads in Mallow (Colman) and we got there around 6.55 pm. It was a long journey and by the time I got my number, chatted to my cousin Don Ryan I only managed a ½ mile warm up with no stretches. There was as usual , for the Ballycotton series, a big crowd for this one with a number of Mallow runners vying for a coveted top 50 men’s and top 20 women’s finish. I had planned to give a sub 34 a shot which meant running at 6.45 pace. Mile 1 I took handy. Having no garmin meant I had no choice. That passed in 6.53 which meant I had to hit the next 4 miles in 6.43 pace. Mile 2 passed (i think) in 6.49 which meant that the sub 34 would have to wait for a while yet. Went past a few runners I knew so I figured I was running well. My best form was saved for the hill from 2.5 miles to mile 3. I got a unexpected surge of energy and took out a large number of runners. I probably made a mistake in holding back slightly from mile 3 to mile 4. I felt strong but was fearful of the last mile into Ballycotton. One older guy in a luminous yellow shirt stopped and tied his lace but caught up with me before mile 4. Over my shoulder I counted 3 good club runners behind me and in front of me a lady who was always just ahead of me in 4/5 mile races I have done over the summer. I gave the guy in the yellow the slip and pushed on for the last ½ mile from the church. For the first time in ages I accelerated and finished strongly just ahead of a very good runner from Donoughamore. I crossed the line in a watch time of 34.11 which was a PB for me and only a few footsteps away from my new 5 mile target. It was a tough and testing course and as usual was excellently organised. Aidan and Sharon did brilliantly to finish in the top 50 mens and top 20 womens section. In the latters case I think Sharon set a PB and wasn’t far off winning the women’s section outright. They are flying at the moment. I was very happy with my race and as a speed workout was ideal. Did a half mile cooldown. Next year will consider doing the full 4 races and will be aiming to get sub 34 that’s for sure. The most important workout of the week is at the weekend though.....

6 miles with 5 miles at 34.11 with ½ mile warmup and ½ mile coodown

Clonmel half marathon report- A kick in the rear

19th August – Clonmel half marathon.

Was dreading this a bit but I knew despite the struggle I was going to face it was a race that needed to be run. I had aimed for a modest goal – 1.44 to 1.45, in other words run this as a long run at marathon pace. Bumped into a few lads from Mallow AC, they all had their own goals ranging from 1.25 to 1.50. Warmed up with 2 miles. When the race started I stayed in behind the 1.44 pacer and for the first 2 miles I was slightly out of breath. By mile 3 I felt a lot more comfortable and while the legs were hardly fresh i was content enough to rumble along at approx 7.40 pace. After 60 minutes I had covered 8 miles which was on the slow side for me but was feeling optimistic that I might do better than I thought. By mile 9 the legs were feeling really h-e-a-v-y and I knew I was in trouble. I hit mile 10 in 1.17 ish and my race was run. I walked ran jogged the next 2 miles something I have only done twice before. The sight of the 1.44 pacer was enough to get me going again but by 12.57 miles (Aine the pacer informed me of this)  I was back walking for a few minutes. I managed to revive myself enough to jog gingerly over the finishing line for a chip time of 1.45.16. The Mallow lads did very well with most of them coming in well ahead of me.

So what lessons have I learned? I know I am well out of shape in terms of achieving a sub 3.30. I know I will manage to improve on this poor effort for 2 upcoming half marathons in September. I also know I need to focus on my LT threshold and in particular on my long runs. The next 7 weeks will be crucial in this regard. As a training run I did manage the first 10 miles at MP pace but the last 3 miles were poor efforts. That said my body and legs will benefit from this workout. A work in progress...

Mileage for the week 52 miles

The Golden Triangle-beer, ice cream, running

Monday 6th August to Sunday 12th August

On my holidays in Basque France and Basque Spain. It was very warm and coupled with a good holidaying time (beer, food and ice cream) I tried to fit in as much running as possible. I had notions of around 32 miles, calling the week as a cutback week. Tuesday did 7 slow miles. Wednesday 4 recovery miles – all run in Toulouse. Friday 10 miles and Saturday around 8.5 miles –all run in Bayonne. Sunday – run 3 or so miles on the beach in San Sebastian, giving me a total of 32 miles for the week. My distances were all approximately measured and I erred on the conservative in this regard. This was because the Garmin I packed got lost somewhere in transit. Gutted to put it mildly. The cost of replacement I don’t even want to think about.....

Total miles 32 miles

Monday 13th August to 18th August

Took a rest day on Monday. Tuesday ran for a hour along the seafront past the Guggenheim in Bilbao. Managed to find myself in some dodgy looking parts of the docklands after 33 minutes so I did the sensible thing and doubled back. Repeated the run on Wednesday and Thursday taking the more scenic route. It was great running in the heat but I had to be careful managing my pace in the heat. Really miss that garmin.

Friday morning. Was back in Charleville for this one. Was surprised at the amount of pep in my step. Ran for 70 minutes. Reckon I covered 8.7 or 8.8 miles.

Saturday. Ran 7 miles at a slow recovery pace. Around 70 minutes or so. Supposed to be running a 13.1 mile race in Clonmel to-morrow. There isn’t a hope of me racing and getting a PB that’s for sure as I haven’t raced a long distance since the Cork half marathon. I had targeted the race as an attempt to run a long distance at Marathon pace and was thinking a time in the range of 1.40 to 1.44 would be respectable. Now I’m not too sure. I have targeted 2 other half marathons in September and I should be well up to racing speed by then. The time between now and the 7th of October will be crucial in particular how I manage long runs, marathon pace long runs and midweek tempo runs

56 plus miles up on the legs

Saturday 4th August
Was out with Timmy and Dermot last night in Cork city. Met up in Bodhran and spent our time chatting and watching the Olympics in the pub. Watching Mo Farah run was inspiring this evening. Anyway drank nothing more stronger than 2 lucozade on Friday night. Feeling a lot better for it today even though I wasn’t home till nearly 3am. Needless to say rest day to day. Long run tomorrow with the Mallow group before i head off to Basque France and Spain for a 10 day training camp holiday ;-)
Sunday 5th August
Ran with the Mallow group this morning. Wanted to do around 16-17 miles but at a slow relaxed pace. I hope that by going at a slow relaxed pace my feet and body would become accustomed to spending time on my feet. Jogged a interesting route. Up the Cork rd, turned off for Dromahane, went through some obscure pathway (feckin nettles) and up onto Dromahane. We jogged passed a old Celtic church.  Stunning views of the countryside and then up and down some  killer hills. Came onto Mallow rd and then a hard few miles home back to the Roundabout Inn. I was one of the last to finish but delighted to get 2Hr’s30mins47seconds of running up on my legs. Did 17.36 miles. Was tempted to run another bit to make it 18 miles but no point in taking chances. Average heart rate was 146 which was ideal.
Total miles for week 56.66 miles. A very good weeks running. What happens over next 11 days will be interesting.
Monday 9 miles, Tuesday 10 miles, Wednesday 4 miles, Thursday 6.3 miles, Friday 10 miles, Sunday 17.36 miles

Why would you run? Sure you be quicker walking...

.........as a auld fella says to me during the week. Maybe he had a point ;-)

30th July

Did 9 miles. First miles were at recovery pace. Picked it up for last 5 miles.

9 miles. 1.21.25. Hr 138

31st July

Club session at 6.30 pm. Jogged 2 miles with fit for life group. Ran 2 miles to industrial estate. Did 20 minute tempo (2.9x miles) and 6 x 45 second sprints with equal recoveries (1 mile). Did a number of drills and jogged 2 miles back to car. Around 10 miles

10 miles – 1.25.30.

1st August

4 mile recovery.Lashed on for the whole duration. Legs a bit heavy after last nights session but otherwise ok.

Total mileage 4, Time 36.44, Hr 136.

2nd August

No sign of that sore throat and stuffed nose going away. Was out running by 7 am. It was defo chilly and I wore the rainproof-taking no sessions after yesterdays soaking. Of course I didn’t need it. Jogged up the passage outside our house and stretched for a few minutes. Didn’t have time for a proper 2 mile warm up and had to make do. Had to do 5 mile tempo and conclude with a warm down. Haven’t done this on my own in a long time. I’ve either ran these as races or with a training group. Mile 1- 7.04. Mile 2- 7.15. Mile 3- 7.19. Mile 4 -7.24. The times were getting worse and worse. Normally i would expect them to stay steady or the last mile to finish strongly. Decided to stop and do a 3 minute recovery walk. Completed mile 5 in 7.14. Jogged last mile home in easy pace around 8.54. Ideally the workout should have been 2 mile warm up – 5 mile tempo at steady 7.10-7.15 pace with 2 mile cooldown. I don’t think I am any less fit than a few weeks ago but the cold, the solo nature of the workout and possibly overloaded with speed workouts all played a part. No harm.

6.3 miles with 4 mile tempo, 3 minute recovery, 1 mile tempo and 1.3 mile cooldown

HR for tempo 160.

3rd August

Olympics looks very exciting over the weekend with the start of the track and field. I on the other hand went out running this morning with a headful of snot up my nose and carrying a nice hefty extra stone of weight on my hips. Anyway each to their own.... ;-) had in my head to do 9 miles at a solid 8.15 -8.30 pace. Huffed and puffed my way around the route 4.5 miles out and 4.5 miles back. Was hitting some strong headwinds coming out of the railway rd and onto the Cork road but once I hit Cooleens i was well sheltered. Was feeling solid rather than fast and tacked another mile by doing a couple of laps around the town park. When I came back home I was feeling rather puffed but heart rate dropped from 148 to 105 in around 70 seconds or so. Job done.

10 miles – 1hr 23 mins 17 seconds – 150 HRM (8.20 pace)

P.s All the best to the irish athletes in the Olympics at the moment in particular the athlethes from Cork. If it wasn't for ye there wouldn't be a hope of us getting a medal ;-)
